In addition to his legal and political side, Bud also had a business side and an entrepreneurial streak. Over the years, he fostered a number of business ideas, including:
- along with lifetime friend, Gene Skora, a tour bus operation for tourists visiting Washington D.C. Affectionately called the “Eaky Squeaky Bus Company, the idea was to use Double Decker busses. It was not successful because the local bus company, DC Transit, coopted the idea for itself and received a contract with the Interior Department. As it turned out, the concept was a precursor for the many “Hop On-Hop Off” busses used around the world;
- Astrindex, a birth control device that used a vaginal swab to measure a woman’s fertility;
- Water Purification of America, a company seeking to produce a device, developed by inventor Charles Ellison, that would utilize low level nuclear waste to safely purify drinking water. This would have brought safe drinking water to remote communities, providing a way to utilize nuclear waste rather than pay to store it and to use fewer chemicals.
Finally, 1975, Bud entered into a partnership with his neighbor, Harry Sellers, a recently retired Navy Captain and engineer, to engage in the new industry of self storage. They built their first warehouse in Daytona Beach, Florida, which eventually led to eight more sites in the mid-Atlantic. The company is now 45 years old, being managed by sons Richard Sellers and Bernie Fensterwald, with plans to extend management to a third generation.
